Acne is a disorder of the pores in which dead skin cells shed much faster than normal. Usually, it’s an inherited condition. You didn’t do anything to cause it! When all these excess skin cells buildup inside the pore, a microcomedone is formed. That’s a fancy term for a super tiny pimple in the lower layers of the skin. That microcomedone may turn into a blackhead or whitehead under the skin-that’s called noninflamed acne. If bacteria is present, it feeds on the dead skin cells and oil, causing inflamed pimples or pustules, possibly cysts. That’s called-you guessed it-inflamed acne. This entire process can take up to 90 days before you actually see it on the surface. Most people have a combination of both types. The good news is- there’s lots we can do to get it under control. And you won’t find it on TikTok!
